Welcome to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
I would also like to thank Past Vice President Skiddie Hurd, who chose not to run for re-election this year, for her many years of service to FOP Lodge #09. Skiddie has worked tirelessly for Lodge #09 over the years and deserves a break. However, we are all hoping she remains active in our lodge. Over the past several years Lodge #09 has become involved in political endorsements in the mayor and council races in Charlotte. It has helped getting mayors and council members elected that share our views on public safety issues but there is much left to do in this area. We need to continue to have a strong political screening process and work to get local officials elected that will further the goals of our officers/members. We need to look outside of Charlotte politics and assist our members in other communities within Mecklenburg County to get like minded individuals elected in their areas as well. On a slightly larger scale I would like to see the FOP Lodge #09 consider an endorsement process for State Legislators also. These legislators control things such as our retirement system, due process for police officers, and many others bills that we have had very little success getting passed in previous legislative sessions. Perhaps if we worked a little harder to get some of these folks elected then we might see more favorable results from them in the future. We are seeing an increase in membership participation at our Lodge meetings, held the first Tuesday of each month, and I hope to see more. The life blood of our organization is the working officers that make up the majority of our membership. We need your ideas, thoughts, insights, and suggestions for improvements that we need to work toward. It does not matter whether you are a police officer, deputy sheriff, state trooper, SBI agent, or federal agent; we need your ideas to truly represent our membership. Please consider attending a membership meeting to see exactly what is going on and offer your assistance wherever you can. I have had the opportunity to serve on the North Carolina State FOP Board of Directors for the past eleven years; nine as National Trustee and the past two years as Vice President. I hope to stay very involved with FOP Lodge #09 as we move forward. Also, I hope to continue my work with the State Lodge as we train and prepare our membership for Collective Bargaining. The North Carolina State Lodge has devoted a tremendous amount of time, money, and talent into collective bargaining and we certainly feel our efforts will pay off. When we are successful in getting this legislation passed the FOP will be more important to our membership than ever before. Make the decision now to get involved so we will all be ready when the time comes. I encourage everyone to work with the new FOP Lodge #09 President, Todd Walther. Todd is a sergeant in CMPD’s Central Division and has been and FOP member and police officer for many years. The new Vice President of Lodge #09, Mark Michalec is also a long time FOP member and CMPD officer assigned to the Auto Theft Unit. If I can ever be any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to give me a call. Stay safe and I hope to see you soon at a FOP Meeting, Randy Hagler Immediate Past President
