FOP LEGAL AID PLAN
When it matters most, we stand with you.
The FOP's Legal Aid Plan provides comprehensive legal protection for Active and Associate A members for qualifying on-duty incidents, including criminal charges, suspension, termination, and civil litigation.

THREE LEVELS OF PROTECTION
CRIMINAL
Critical incidents, including shootings, crashes, in-custody injuries or deaths, and uses of force, can potentially lead to criminal investigations or charges. If you're involved in a critical incident, contact our Critical Incident Team immediately. Even if you're unsure whether you need assistance, our experienced team will evaluate your situation, explain your options, and help ensure you receive the support and protection you need.
ADMINISTRATIVE
Administrative investigations can involve policy violations, misconduct allegations, or potential criminal offenses, with disciplinary consequences ranging from corrective action to termination. Our Legal Aid Plan provides attorney representation throughout administrative proceedings, including eligible Civil Service and employer appeals. Coverage also extends to reviews of your law enforcement certification by the NC Training & Standards Commission, subject to plan terms.
CIVIL
Civil lawsuits may arise following duty-related incidents. While agencies and municipalities typically provide legal representation, the FOP Legal Aid Plan offers protection when your employer declines to defend you. If your agency won't provide coverage, the FOP is there to help protect your rights and career, subject to plan terms.

Legal Aid Coverage & Important Information
Coverage Providers
Criminal and civil legal protection is provided through the National FOP Legal Aid Plan, while administrative legal representation is provided through the North Carolina State FOP.
Duty-Related Coverage Only
The Legal Aid Plan is designed to protect members in matters arising from the performance of their official law enforcement duties. Off-duty incidents and personal legal matters are not covered. For example, an off-duty DWI arrest while on vacation would not qualify for coverage.
Coverage Exclusions
The plan does not provide representation for personal legal disputes or lawsuits initiated by members against individuals, businesses, their employing agency, or agency representatives.
Workplace Concerns & Additional Assistance
While certain employment-related matters may fall outside the Legal Aid Plan, Lodge #9 remains committed to assisting its members whenever possible. Members experiencing workplace concerns are encouraged to contact Lodge leadership directly. Additional assistance may be available depending on the circumstances and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
